A Sacred Landscape in Castelo Branco – From Ancient Civilisations to a Rustic Spiritual Retreat in Portugal

A Sacred Landscape in Castelo Branco – From Ancient Civilisations to a Rustic Spiritual Retreat in Portugal

Set within the peaceful countryside of central Portugal, our Quinta in Castelo Branco lies within a truly unique and historically rich landscape. From our land, both Monte de São Martinho and Nossa Senhora de Mércoles are clearly visible, especially from a central point where the energy of the land feels particularly strong and grounded. It was here that we first experienced a deep and profound connection — something that visitors often feel too, even without knowing anything about the history of the area.

Only after purchasing the property did we discover that our Quinta sits within what is known as the Archaeological Triangle of Castelo Branco, a territory that includes Monte de São Martinho, Mércoles, and Capela de Santa Ana. This is not simply a collection of historical sites, but a continuous cultural and archaeological landscape, with evidence of human presence dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, through the Roman period, and into the Christian era.

Monte de São Martinho forms the ancient core of this landscape. Originally a prehistoric settlement, it later developed into a fortified hilltop community and became a Romanised settlement between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Archaeological discoveries include Bronze Age inscribed stelae, as well as Roman artefacts such as coins, fibulae, glass fragments, and domestic ceramics, all pointing to long-term habitation and daily life. The presence of terra sigillata, fine Roman pottery imported from across the empire, shows that this was a place connected to wider trade networks in Lusitania, not an isolated rural outpost.

What stands out most is that the Romans did not replace what was already here — they adapted it. They reused existing structures and integrated local traditions, creating a blended cultural and spiritual landscape. Evidence of stone altars (aras) suggests continued ritual practices, possibly combining indigenous beliefs with Roman traditions. In the wider region, dedications to local deities alongside Roman customs reveal how deeply these worlds were intertwined.

The nearby site of Nossa Senhora de Mércoles represents the next layer in this long story. The current church, built in the late Gothic period and possibly linked to the Knights Templar, reflects a well-known Iberian pattern — Christianity established on earlier sacred ground. Even the name “Mércoles” is believed to connect to Mercury, the Roman god of travelers, boundaries, and communication, which aligns with the location’s position within a landscape of movement, visibility, and ancient routes.

Completing the triangle is the Capela de Santa Ana, a small rural chapel that helps define the spatial alignment of this territory. Together, these three points form a coherent archaeological and symbolic landscape, where visibility, positioning, and continuity suggest not only settlement, but also territorial awareness and possibly ritual pathways.

Across all these periods, one thing remains clear — the land was never abandoned. It was simply reinterpreted. From prehistoric communities marking the land with stone, to Roman settlers integrating it into an empire, to Christian builders establishing places of worship, each culture recognised something essential about this place.

It was during the COVID lockdown that we first discovered this Quinta. At that time, the property had been abandoned for four years, overgrown and closed off. Yet from the moment we walked through the gates, there was a clear sense that this place held something deeper. The house required restoration, but we knew we had the ability to transform it. More than anything, it was the land itself that called to us. Certain areas carried a distinct, grounded energy — something steady, present, and undeniable. In that moment, we looked at each other and knew this was where we were meant to be.

Today, this land has become our Quinta and spiritual retreat in Portugal, a place where we live, work, and share what we have created. We offer meditation and Reiki workshops, Reiki treatments, and relaxing massage, along with practices focused on grounding, reconnection, and protection. Our work also includes The Violet Flame (The Alchemist’s Dream)psychic development workshops, and Moon Circles, all designed to support personal growth and deeper awareness.

Located close to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and connected to our O Caminho Violeta shop, the Quinta is part of a wider journey — one of movement, reflection, and transformation. It is both a working farm and a spiritual retreat, rooted in nature, sustainable living, and healing.

Since then, something very special has revealed itself through the people who visit our Quinta in Castelo Branco, Portugal. Again and again, without prompting, we hear the same words:
“It feels like coming home.”

This is something I had heard many times before when I was the catalyst for the Alternative World Healing Circle — a space where like-minded people would gather, reconnect, and share in a common energy and understanding. That same essence is present here today.

The Quinta holds that same feeling of reunion, reconnection, and belonging, making it more than just a place to visit. It has naturally become a spiritual retreat in Portugal where people can step away from the noise of everyday life, reconnect with themselves, and experience healing, grounding, and inner balance.

For many who arrive, this is not just a rural retreat or a peaceful escape — it is a space of personal transformation, connection to nature, and a deep sense of home, where the ancient energy of the land continues to support well-being, reflection, and spiritual growth.
